The all-electric sports sedan is about to get a lot more interesting
and, likely, faster. The Porsche's board has voted to send the Mission E into
production by the end of the decade.
If you
missed the unveiling earlier this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mission E — then in concept form — is a true
Tesla Model S fighter. It's capable of doing 0 to 62 mph in less than 3.5
seconds, and it boats a range of over 310 miles.
Importantly,
thanks to an "800-volt charger unit specially developed for the car, which
is twice as powerful as today's quick-charge systems," Porsche says in its
press release, "the lithium-ion batteries integrated within the vehicle
floor have enough power again for 80 percent of the range after just 15
minutes."
The company
is investing 700 million euros into the project, which clearly signals that
Porsche doesn't simply want to be a player in sporty electrification; it wants
to be the leader.
"With
Mission E, we are making a clear statement about the future of the brand,"
Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG said in a
statement. "Even in a greatly changing motoring world, Porsche will
maintain its front-row position with this fascinating sports car."
So there you
have it. Battered by diesel gate,
Porsche quickly responds with a promising — and powerful — step into the
electrified future.
